Despite
entering only eight wrestlers in last weekends 25 team Richmond
Invitational, Thomas Dale battled with many of the state's best to
finish seventh overall in the team standings.
John Dommert (171) was Dale's sole champion, defeating Hermitage's
Marc Heathcock in a much anticipated matchup of the region's top
171-pounders. In what could have easily been named the
finals most exciting match, Dommert and Heathcock went back and
forth with Heathcock owning a 2-0 lead at the end of the first
period. At the end of the second, Dommert had a 5-2 lead
after gaining a reversal and 3-nearfall points. In the
third, Heathcock tied the score with an escape and takedown.
In the last :30 seconds, Dommert earned a reversal to edge out
Heathcock, 7-6.
Also having a good tournament was James White (125) and Brandon
Diamond (145) who finished third while teammate, Kyle Felter
(140), finished fourth. Diamond had notable wins over
Robertson (Ocean Lakes - Ranked #3 at 140) and over Mike Mosley (Kempsville
- Ranked #8 at 135). Felter defeated #8 ranked Max Wareing
of First Colonial by fall in the quarterfinals.
Paden Rudd (135) and Ruben Sajnin (160) were both 4-2 on the day,
only one match away from placing in the top six.
